101 Careers in Nursing

101 Careers in Nursing, written by four nurses, is a comprehensive guide to all types of nursing. In alphabetical order, and in a clear and concise manner, the book describes each nursing specialty and lists the educational requirements, skills needed, compensation, employment outlook, related Web sites and professional organizations.

Based on my own experiences as a medical surgical, perianesthesia, critical care, telemetry and staff development educator, the content throughout the book appears wholly accurate.

Actual nurses in a variety of settings were also interviewed for the book. The nurses describe their educational experiences, and also why they became interested in nursing. The nurses describe a typical workday, why their career is rewarding, and offer advice on how to balance work and home.

Practicing RNs should find the guide to certification appendix useful for professional growth. A chapter on tips for launching a career search is helpful for any present or future nurse. High school students, nursing students, and nurses looking for a career change should also find this guide enlightening.

Amy Luckowski is the Critical Care Staff Development Instructor at the Chester County Hospital, West Chester, PA.
