Gould Wins National Award

Wallena Gould, MSN, CRNA, South Jersey Healthcare System, Vineland, NJ, was top national winner in the advanced practice nurse category of the Cherokee Inspired Comfort Awards, which honor exemplary service and care.

Concerned by the small percentage of minorities among the nation's CRNAs, Gould began mentoring fellow students while at La Salle University, Philadelphia, and also reached out to minority students at other universities. In 2008, the former Ernst & Young auditor launched the nonprofit Diversity in Nurse Anesthesia Mentorship Program. To date, Gould has mentored approximately 2,000 CRNAs and CRNA candidates.

Swan, Barry Win Nightingales

Beth Ann Swan, PhD, CRNP, professor and senior associate dean of academic affairs at Thomas Jefferson University's Jefferson School of Nursing, Philadelphia, received the Excellence in Nursing Research Award at the 2009 Nightingale Awards of Pennsylvania event in October. In addition, Megan Elizabeth Barry, a student in the ASN-BSN program, received a scholarship.

O'Brien, Sheeran Receive Nightingale Awards

Two Main Line Health nurses received awards at the recent Nightingale Awards of Pennsylvania.

Irene O'Brien, RN, an ICU nurse at Paoli Hospital, Paoli, PA, received the Patient's Choice Award. She was nominated by the family of a former patient for devotion, dedication and exceptional care. O'Brien began her career at Bryn Mawr Hospital ICU before moving to the ICU at Paoli Hospital 4 years ago.

Robin Sheeran, RN, Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital, Malvern, PA, received the Clinical Practice RN Award. Sheeran, a wound care specialist, works at Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital with patients who experienced stroke.

Villanova Announces Achievements

M. Louise Fitzpatrick, EdD, RN, FAAN, Connelly Endowed Dean and Professor of the Villanova University College of Nursing, Villanova, PA, was recently elected a registered nurse trustee to the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools international board of trustees.

She will serve a 4-year term beginning in January. Fitzpatrick has served 3 years on the commission's committee on appeals.

In other university news, MSN student Jineen Redden-Huff, BSN, RN-BC, CCRN, will be among a select group of Delaware residents to receive the 2010 YMCA Black Achievers Award Dec. 10 in Wilmington, DE.

Redden-Huff was nominated twice for mentoring nurses, leadership skills and community service. She is a critical care/PACU nurse at Christiana Care Health Systems, Newark, DE.

Gorman Appointed CNO

Kathy Chavanu Gorman, MSN, RN, was recently appointed senior vice president and chief nursing officer at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

She previously served as vice president of quality and clinical support services at Children's National Medical Center, Washington, DC. Prior to that, she worked at the Hospital for Sick Children, Washington, DC, and St. Joseph Hospital at Creighton University, Omaha, NE.

Good Samaritan RNs Earn Certification

Hanover Nurses Make Dean's List

Several nurses at Hanover Hospital, Hanover, PA, recently made the dean's list at Penn State University campus in Mont Alto, PA: Jaime A. Cool, RN, Christina B. Funkhouser, RN, Lynn Langrill, RN, Diana L. Palmer, RN, Gloria Sanders, RN, Amy E. Troy, RN, and Dana A. Yealy, RN.

Fox Chase Nurses Honored

Andrea Barsevick, PhD, RN, AOCN, FAAN, director of nursing research at Fox Chase Cancer Center, Philadelphia, was recently inducted as a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing.

In other Fox Chase news, Joanne Hambleton, MSN, RN, NE-BC, vice president of nursing and patient services, presented a poster about strategic planning that won for innovation in the leadership category at the National Magnet Conference in Louisville, KY, in October.

Watkins Earns CCRN

Edna Watkins, BSN, RN, CCRN, an ICU nurse at Bayhealth Medical Center's Kent General Hospital, Dover, DE, recently earned certification in critical care nursing.
