VP/CNO Appointed At Piedmont Hospital

Connie F. Whittington, MSN, RN, ONC, has been promoted as vice president of patient services and chief nursing officer at Piedmont Hospital, Atlanta.

Whittington has served as Piedmont Hospital's interim vice president and CNO since October. She served as the administrative director of nursing systems for the past 2 years focusing on strategic nursing initiatives, patient flow improvements, nursing performance improvement, clinical IT deployment and nursing retention strategies. During her previous 15 years of Piedmont Hospital nursing experience, she has served in various clinical, educational and research leadership roles.

"Piedmont has a long tradition of employing the finest nurses, and I'm proud to be part of such a well-respected team of healthcare professionals," Whittington said.

At a national nursing level, Whittington served as president of the National Association of Orthopaedic Nurses and president of the National Federation for Specialty Nursing Organizations. She is the first registered nurse appointed to an FDA Device Panel, and she currently serves as the consumer advocate on the FDA Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Device Panel.

UNC HealthCare Announces Staff Achievements

UNC HealthCare, Chapel Hill, NC, recently announced several staff achievements.

Eric Wolak, MSN, RN, CCRN, assistant nurse manager, in the cardiothoracic ICU at the UNC HealthCare Heart Center in Chapel Hill, NC, recently achieved his cardiac surgery subspecialty from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses. In addition, his article, "Nursing Grand Rounds as a Medium for the Continuing Education of Nurses," is being published in the April 2008 issue of the Journal of Continuing Education in Nursing.

The following nurses have achieved board certification in nursing administration from the American Nurses Credentialing Center: Kathy Guyette, MSN, RN, vice president and associate chief nursing officer; Jeff Strickler, MA, RN, director emergency medical services; Carolyn Viall Donohue, MSN, RN, director, women's/children's services; Ginny Griffin, BSN, RN, nurse manager 3-Anderson; Jacci Harden, BSN, RN, nurse manager CCU; Karen Poole-Dawkins, MSN, RN, nurse manager, psychiatry; Michael Smith, RN, nurse manager for 6 Neuroscience; and Mauri Williams, MBA, MHA, nurse manager, NICU.

Murphy RN Earns Maternal Certification

Murphy Medical Center, Murphy, NC, recently announced Selena Roberts, RN,C, of the maternal infant unit, earned national maternal newborn certification through the National Certification Corp. Roberts passed an exam and practiced 24 months comprised of a minimum of 2,000 hours in the maternal newborn setting.

New Directors at MosesCone Health System

Moses Cone Health System, Greensboro, NC, has announced new nursing directors at its hospitals.

Lynda Moss, RN, is the new department director of the medical-psychiatric department at Wesley Long Community Hospital. Moss joined Wesley Long in 2007 as a night staff nurse on the oncology unit.

Sylvia McCauley, BSN, RN, will be interim director of the heart department at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital. McCauley came to the department as assistant director in 2006.

Debbie Green, MSN, NP, is the new director of nursing services at Annie Penn Hospital in Reidsville, NC. She transfers to Annie Penn Hospital from a similar position in Moses Cone Health System. She has been with Moses Cone Health System since 1993.

Green is responsible for the 260-person nursing staff at Annie Penn Hospital.

Mission Names Director Of Emergency Services

Mission Hospitals, Asheville, NC, has named Susan Jarvis, MSN, RN, as administrative director of emergency services. Jarvis will lead the two Mission emergency departments, as well as air and ground transport.
