Achieving My Documented Goals

While in LPN school in 2002, my peers and I attended a nursing conference in Portsmouth, Virginia. ADVANCE was present and representatives asked some of the conference attendees questions about our future goals. I answered the questions, had my picture taken and continued on with the day's activities.

Later, when the magazine arrived in the mail, I was totally surprised! ADVANCE published my picture and a quote from my responses. I remember saying that I planned to obtain a master's degree in order to help with how care is orchestrated. Here I am, about 10 years later, and I obtained my goal! How cool is that? I earned my associate's, bachelor's, and master's degrees. I also have a certification in psychiatric-mental health nursing. And, as I foresaw for myself years ago, I now influence how care is provided. Additionally, I currently teach psychiatric nursing to ADN students.

Setting goals is one of the first steps in starting a nursing career. Goals are important to the progression of the nursing field and I am grateful to be able to show my students that perseverance pays off. Thank you ADVANCE for documenting the start of my journey!
