David Zullo, RN, EMT-P, Marrero, LA, recently was announced as a national winner in the registered nurses category of the 2008 Cherokee Inspired Comfort Award presented by Cherokee Uniforms. His quick actions helped save a young man's life.
When Zullo heard an electrical explosion, the off-duty volunteer paramedic and former Marine raced toward the scene to save a man who had been electrocuted. He balanced on a secured beam nearly 30 feet above the ground to reach the injured man, whose weight he supported for nearly 30 minutes until emergency help arrived. Today, the young man lives because of Zullo's heroic and selfless actions.
"There is no doubt in my mind David will respond like this in any and every situation," said his nominator, former colleague Kerry Jeanice, RN, EMT-P, clinical manager for emergency preparedness at West Jefferson Medical Center in Marrero. "He places his life on the line because he knows he can make a difference every day he is on the streets serving the community."
When asked what he likes most about the nursing profession, Zullo remarked, "My greatest joys are the never-ending surprises and that private, inner feeling you get when you know you have made a difference in someone's life."
