SMU Mourns the Loss of Patricia Harvey Webb, EdD, RN

Students and faculty of Samuel Merritt University (SMU), Oakland, are mourning the loss of their teacher and friend Patricia "Pat" Harvey Webb, EdD, RN, who died on Jan. 23. Webb served as an associate professor in the School of Nursing after beginning her career at SMU in 1980. The Arkansas native lived in Benicia.

"She taught nursing at the university for 30 years, becoming an integral member of the School of Nursing faculty, and central to the med/surg and critical care nursing courses," said Audrey Berman, PhD, RN, AOCN, dean of the School of Nursing. "Through her life's works, and the hundreds of students she taught over the years, she made a tremendous impact that will not be forgotten."

Sharon Diaz, president and CEO of SMU, described Webb as a professional and extremely caring individual. "Pat was an exceptional nurse, a fine teacher and a person who cared deeply about her students and the patients for whom they cared."

Webb put great emphasis on treating the patients as whole and sentient beings. In addition to critical care classes, she also taught nursing theory at the graduate level. She received several grants for her main research focus, Women's Knowledge of Risk Factors for Heart Disease, in both the U.S. and Japan. She was a member of the American Nurses Association, American Heart Association, American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, the Japanese Society of Nursing Research and Sigma Theta Tau, the international nursing honor society. "Dr. Webb was a very dedicated faculty member who cared deeply for her students and the community she served," Diaz said. "Moreover Pat was a good friend to all of us."

In addition to her work at SMU, Webb was involved in many charitable and professional efforts. "That was just another whole aspect of Pat, her religious faith and service to the people in the community," Berman said. "She was a wonderful role model to all who knew her."

There will be a remembrance service at SMU Health Education Center Fontaine Auditorium on Thursday, Feb. 25, at 4 p.m., followed by reception in the Bechtel Room. A nursing scholarship fund has been established to honor the life and work of Webb. Contributions for the fund can be made payable to Samuel Merritt University and sent to Samuel Merritt University c/o Office of Development and Alumni Affairs, 450 30th St., Suite 2840, Oakland, CA 94609. "Webb Scholarship" should be noted on the check. All contributions will be acknowledged and the family will be notified.
