ADVANCE Editorial Staff

Linda Jones
Linda Jones has more than 20 years of experience in medical communications, including working on and launching several peer-reviewed journals, monthly health care magazines and licensing exams for physicians. She joined ADVANCE in 1990 and is editorial director of the nation's leading biweekly publication for physical therapists. In 1992, she launched ADVANCE for Directors in Rehabilitation. Today, she is editorial director for the ADVANCE series of nursing publications.

Gail Guterl
Editor of the first two editions of ADVANCE for Nurses, Gail Guterl began her career as a newspaper reporter in Mount Vernon, Westchester County, NY. She was the first recipient of the Jacqueline Z. Radin Memorial Award, from the New York Newswomen's Society in 1974. She began at Merion Publications as a writer for the laboratory magazine. She created our first two nursing magazines: ADVANCE for Nurses, Serving RNs in Areas of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware and ADVANCE for Nurses, Serving RNs in Areas of Maryland, Washington DC and Virginia.

Richard Krisher
Richard Krisher joined Merion Publications in 1999 as associate editor for all regional editions of ADVANCE for Nurses, and now is editor of ADVANCE for Nurses Serving RNs in the Southeastern States and ADVANCE for Nurses Serving RNs in the State of Florida. He graduated with a degree in English from Trenton State College (now the College of New Jersey) in 1988. He worked as a newspaper reporter and editor for 9 years before entering the trade publishing field.

Lyn A.E. McCafferty
Lyn A.E. McCafferty is editor of ADVANCE for Nurses Serving RNs in the Greater New York/New Jersey Metro Area and ADVANCE for Nurses Serving RNs in New England. She has more than 15 years of journalism experience, working in a variety of roles from reporting to editing at the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Times Herald-Record in Middletown, NY, and the Delaware County Daily Times. She graduated from Temple University, Philadelphia, with a degree in journalism and currently teaches journalism at Penn State's Delaware County campus.

Pamela Tarapchak
Pamela Tarapchak, has been with ADVANCE since 1998. Currently, she serves as editor of ADVANCE for Nurses Serving RNs in Greater Chicago & Metro Areas of Wisconsin & Indiana and ADVANCE for Nurses Serving RNs in Metro Areas of Texas and Louisiana. She previously worked as senior associate editor of ADVANCE for Administrators of the Laboratory. She graduated from Penn State University in 1991 with a BA in journalism. Prior to joining ADVANCE, she worked for 8 years at Penn State in various public relations roles.

Lisa A. Brzezicki
Lisa A. Brzezicki has been with ADVANCE since 1993. She is editor of ADVANCE for Nurses Serving RNs in Southern California and ADVANCE for Nurses Serving RNs in Northern California and Reno, NV. She previously worked as associate editor of ADVANCE for Administrators of the Laboratory and editor of ADVANCE for Medical Laboratory Professionals. Prior to joining ADVANCE, she was associate editor for the Catholic Library Association in Haverford, PA, and the special projects editor for Printing Impressions at North American Publishing Company in Philadelphia. She graduated from Cabrini College with a BA in English/Communications.

Adrianne O'Brien
Adrianne O'Brien joined ADVANCE in 2000. After serving as editor of ADVANCE for Audiologists, she launched ADVANCE for LPNs Serving Florida. She was editor of that publication and ADVANCE for LPNs Serving the New York/New Jersey/Connecticut regions before joining the ADVANCE for Nurses team in 2004 as a consulting editor. Previously, she was a technical writer and consumer magazine editor. She graduated from the University of Delaware in 1992 with a BA in English.

Kay Bensing
Kay Bensing, MA, RN, senior staff nurse consultant, has more than 35 years of nursing experience; most in nursing education. She has master's degrees in education and journalism. She has extensive experience in curriculum development continuing education. She developed, contributed and authored a number of nurse review courses and books. At ADVANCE, besides her editorial and consulting responsibilities, she administers the nursing continuing education program.

Abigail Scott
Abigail Scott joined ADVANCE for Nurses as assistant editor in 1999 following 5 years of experience in the ADVANCE family of magazines. She now serves as senior associate editor. Prior to ADVANCE for Nurses, she was assistant editor of ADVANCE for Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists. She graduated from Elizabethtown (PA) College in 1992 with a degree in English and a concentration in professional writing.

Chuck Holt
Chuck Holt joined Merion Publications in 2001 as regional editor for the Florida edition of ADVANCE for Nurses. He is based in the Ft. Myers, FL office and  writes/edits for all of the ADVANCE for Nurses magazines in addition to being Web editor. He graduated from Penn Valley College in Kansas City, MO in 1996 with a degree in mass communications. Previously, he was a reporter for the Columbia (MO) Daily Tribune, Kansas City Business Journal and Wireless Review, an international trade magazine. He also was editor of three daily newsmagazines for Kansas City, MO-based Internet publisher BizSpace Inc.

Barbara Mercer
Barbara Mercer joined ADVANCE for Nurses in January 2003 as assistant editor of the Chicago Tri-State area regional edition and has since helped launch the Texas and Louisiana edition. She graduated from Widener University in 1995 with a degree in English with a concentration in creative writing.

Karin Lillis
Karin Lillis joined ADVANCE for Nurses in 2004 as regional editor for the Florida edition. She graduated from Allentown College of St. Francis de Sales (now DeSales University) with a degree in English/Communications. Before entering the healthcare publishing field in 2000, she held reporting and editing positions with newspapers in Pennsylvania and Florida.

Candy Goulette
Candy Goulette joined ADVANCE for Nurses in August 2004 as regional editor based in Sacramento, focusing on Northern California and the metro Reno/Carson City/Lake Tahoe, NV area. She has a BA in marketing and a master's degree in journalism. She began her journalism career in 1988 as communications director for Keweenaw Memorial Medical Center in Laurium, MI. She joined The Daily Mining Gazette in Houghton, MI in 1994 as a reporter and became news editor in 1995. There, she received six Associated Press and Michigan Press Awards for writing. In California since 2000, she has worked as managing editor for several medical publications, including Real Life Healthcare, a monthly magazine for nurses and ancillary healthcare professionals.

Luke Cowles
Luke Cowles joined the ADVANCE for Nurses team in June 2004 as regional editor for Southern California. After earning a BA in mass media communications and sociology from the University of Akron, was public information officer for the Ohio Hunger Task Force and communications director for the Building Industry Association. His professional experience also includes media relations director for the Los Angeles Superior Court and public relations director for the UCLA Center for Community Health.

Rich Magda
Rich Magda joined ADVANCE for Nurses in December 2009 as senior associate editor for the California/Northern Nevada edition. He earned a BA in English/communication from Cabrini College and began his career in journalism working as a reporter and as an editor at community newspapers throughout Pennsylvania. He has worked as an editor at LexisNexis and as a public relations specialist for a business software company.
