McKesson, Emergency Nurses Association Unveil Benchmarking Collaborative

View Comments (0)Print ArticleEmail Article

Limited access to timely, evidence-based benchmarks supported by national-level data exacerbates ED overcrowding. To help meet these challenges head-on, McKesson, in a joint initiative with the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA), has unveiled the ED Benchmarks Collaborative (EDBC).

Using the EDBC, a unique online service, hospitals will have the ability to access current information and spot trend via the Internet on 17 key performance indicators (KPI) for the ED in three categories: throughput, productivity and quality. The categories, or measures, were developed using consensus definitions from key stakeholder organizations, consideration of the 2010 National Hospital Inpatient Quality Measures from the Joint Commission and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and expert insight from the ENA.

Slated to become available this summer, the EDBC is vendor-neutral and provides monthly KPI data, empowering C-level executives with quality improvement initiatives. Using an online dashboard, users submit existing data and access internal and national trends without the need to purchase additional software or hardware.

"True quality improvement begins with a better understanding of where you are and where you need to go," said David A. Westman, MBA, CPA, executive director of ENA and CEO of the Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing. "By working with McKesson on the ED Benchmarks Collaborative, ENA is empowering healthcare leaders and emergency nurses to meet our common goal of improved patient care through enhanced performance metric tracking and greater knowledge of current best practices."
