Emergency Nurses Endorse IOM 'Future of Nursing' Report

The Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) on May 19 announced its endorsement of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) consensus report on The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health.

This report was developed under the auspices of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative on the Future of Nursing at the Institute of Medicine.

"ENA's core mission is to bring safe practice and safe patient care to emergency department nursing.  That has been, and will continue to be, our focus," said 2011 ENA President AnnMarie Papa, DNP, RN, CEN, NE-BC, FAEN.   "The IOM report mirrors that commitment, making our endorsement in perfect alignment as we position ourselves for the future.

"It is ENA's position that in order for nurses to provide patients the best care possible, they must be given not only the resources but the right to practice to the fullest extent of their education and training and the IOM report makes that point clearly," added Papa.

ENA's endorsement of the IOM report came following the inaugural meeting of the ENA Future of Nursing Work team on April 4-5, 2011.  That team, made up of emergency nurse leaders from around the country, identified more than two dozen ENA initiatives or educational products that are already helping to achieve the goals of the report.

In her letter to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation informing them of ENA's endorsement, Papa stated: "Moving forward, ENA will continue to inform, educate and raise awareness of the report through its publications, meetings, conferences and committees, engaging members to explore opportunities and challenges in the advancement of these recommendations, and brainstorming solutions to give emergency nurses a voice in the process, as well as continue to use public policy to support the initiatives in these recommendations."

With this endorsement, ENA, representing more than 39,000 members, joins other stakeholders, including the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, American Nurses Association, American Organization of Nurse Executives, and National League for Nursing, in support of the report's recommendations.
