Hackensack Nurses Deliver Baby in Hospital Parking Garage

Recently, two nurses from Hackensack, NJ, assisted a woman as she delivered a baby boy in the parking garage of Hackensack University Medical Center.

The expectant mother, Selis Tavsancil, and her husband, Mustafa Tavsansil, from Edgewater, NJ, had arrived at a hospital- but were not quite in it-when Selis' baby began to arrive. A pair of nurses who had just entered the parking garage sprang to their aid. The baby, Aksel Onur, weighing 6 pounds, 9 ounces, was born two steps away from the Tavsancils' grey Nissan Sentra.
Denise DeSalvo, a nurse who works in the pediatric operating room, was arriving to work when she saw them and sprung into action. Christine Zweil, another nurse who works in the neonatal intensive care unit, noticed the commotion, dropped her lunch bag on the floor and joined in.
Neither nurse had delivered a baby before, but they quickly took control, calling for the neonatal intensive care unit to come to the parking garage and helping Selis take deep breaths.
They told Mustafa his wife needed to lie down on the back seat of the car; but Selis wouldn't make it to the car. The baby came out as she stayed standing.
Days later, as the overjoyed parents prepared to leave Hackensack University Medical Center with their healthy newborn, they reflected on a frantic delivery full of improvisations, and counted their good fortune that two experienced nurses happened to be passing by.
"With their help, we lived an unforgettable moment," Mustafa Tavsancil said.
