Honor Society of Nursing Publishes Step-by-Step Guide to Grant Writing

View Comments (0)Print ArticleEmail Article

More than $70 million in grant money is available for nursing education, training and workplace development for current and prospective nurses, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

To aid nurses in the highly competitive field of grant writing, the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) has released The Nurse's Grantwriting Advantage: How Grantwriting Can Advance Your Nursing Career by Rebecca Bowers-Lanier, EdD, MPH, MSN, RN.

Grant writing can be an intimidating concept, but according to STTI, this new book provides a step-by-step guide for nurses who are writing a grant proposal for the first time or for nurses who want to improve their skill and results.

While a few other books exist for nurses or healthcare professionals who write grants on a routine basis, STTI officials say there is nothing for first-time grant writers or nurses who may only write a few key grants during their careers.

Written in the Q&A style of STTI's popular Nurse's Advantage series, The Nurse's Grantwriting Advantage features lists, tips, tricks and quick references.

Content includes:

  • Grant making in reverse: Awarding grants through giving circles
  • Finding a solution for your practice pet peeve
  • Searching for money
  • Project planning
  • Making the "ask" or responding to a request for proposals
  • Evaluating the project
  • The budget
  • Putting on the final touches
  • Excelling at a site visit
  • Awaiting the decision and planning next steps

Bowers-Lanier has a broad and varied career that includes staff nursing and supervision; nursing education and educational administration; program development and evaluation; and "grantsmanship," including grant writing, grants administration and technical assistance for grantees.

Bowers-Lanier is president of B2L Consulting in Richmond, VA, where she works as a legislative advocate consultant at the state level for nonprofits in health care and public education. She is the former Deputy Director of Colleagues in Caring: Regional Collaborative for Nursing Work Force Development, a national program funded by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
