In collaboration with Health Ministries Association, the national professional membership organization for faith community nurses, ANA on Jan. 24 published Faith Community Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, 2nd Edition.
Developed by 21 practicing RNs whose expertise represents the specialty's roles across the U.S., and refined by a public review period and a formal review process by other RNs, this publication offers broad national perspective applicable to many faith traditions.
Grounded in the co-published 2005 and 1998 editions, and rooted in ANA's Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, 2nd Edition, the book is a fully updated edition (available also as an eBook) delineates the essentials of faith community nursing.
Faith community nursing is a practice specialty that focuses on the intentional care of the spirit, promotion of an integrative model of health, and prevention and minimization of illness within the context of a faith community. Such practitioners consider the spiritual, physical, psychological, and social aspects of an individual to create a sense of harmony with self, others, the environment, and a higher power.
The 16 Standards of Faith Community Nursing Practice reflect the specialty's professional values and priorities and provide practice directions and the framework for practice evaluation. Each standard is measurable by a set of specific competencies that serve as evidence of minimal compliance with that standard.
Since the late 1990s, ANA has partnered with other nursing organizations to establish a formal process for recognition of specialty areas of nursing practice. ANA's approval of specialty nursing scope of practice statements and acknowledgment of specialty standards of practice remain valid for 5 years, starting from the publication date of the specialty scope and standards document.
Health Ministries Association, Inc., a nonprofit membership organization, is a support network for people of faith who promote whole-person health through faith groups in the communities they serve. It is the recognized professional membership organization for the nursing specialty of faith community nursing and promotes education, research utilization and evidence-based practice.
