Study: RNs, APRNs & PAs Surfing Web More for Professional Reasons

Healthcare market research and advisory firm Manhattan Research recently released its latest Taking the Pulse Nurses 2012 study focused on digital adoption and behaviors of U.S. nurses and PAs.

The study surveyed 1,019 U.S. practicing nurses and physician assistants online during the second quarter of this year. The data can be segmented across a variety of target specialist audiences, including oncologist nurses, diabetes nurses and ob/gyn nurses.

Among the study's findings:

Average time online per week for professional purposes:

  • RNs = 16 hours
  • APRNs = 14 hours
  • PAs = 14 hours
  • Physicians = 11 hours

Smartphone use during patient consultations:

  • PAs = 74 percent
  • RNs = 67 percent
  • APRNs = 60 percent
  • Physicians = 40 percent

Use of pharmaceutical or biotech websites weekly:

  • RNs = 37 percent
  • PAs = 30 percent
  • APRNs = 26 percent
  • Physicians = 23 percent

Interest in using pharma features on EHR:

  • PAs = 83 percent
  • RNs = 79 percent
  • APRNs = 76 percent
  • Physicians = 67 percent
