Eleven nurses from Children's Hospital Boston presented at the 2011 Association of Pediatric Oncology and Hematology Nurses (APHON) 35th Annual National Conference held in Anaheim, CA.
Three of the presentations were one-hour concurrent sessions, including, Joan O'Brien-Shea, MSN, RN, Colleen Dansereau, BSN, RN, CPN and Stacey Edwards Overy, RN, who presented "The Role of the Bedside Nurse in Clinical Trials," JoEllen Edson, BSN, RN, CPON, "Comfort Measures for Children and Families at the End of Life," and Lisa Morrissey, MSN, RN, CPON, Pam Dockx, RN, and Peggy Conway, RN, who presented "Nursing Initiatives to Reduce Central Line-Associated Blood Stream Infections in Pediatric Oncology Patients."
Two of the presentations were paper presentations by Morrissey and Colleen Nixon, MSN, RN, CPON, entitled, "The Chemotherapy Huddle: A Strategy to Maximize Chemotherapy Safety," and "Outcomes Associated with Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters vs. Surgically Implanted Ports During Induction Therapy for ALL Patients" by Dockx, Morrissey and Conway.
There were also two poster presenters, Anna Roche, RN, "Methylnaltrexone and Its Implications for Use in the Pediatric Palliative Care Population," and "Development of an Aplastic Anemia Patient and Family Handbook," by O'Brien-Shea and Tara Barlow.
Support from Children's Hospital Boston staff development department and the Milliotis Foundation made it possible for this number of presenters to be able to attend the 2011 National APHON conference.
