Certified Nurse Midwife Kim Millsap, MSN, WHNP, CNM, delivered Skylar Brooke Smith at 1:49 p.m. on Jan. 1, 2012, claiming the title of first baby born at Cartersville Medical Center (CMC) for 2012.
The baby girl weighed 6 pounds, 2 ounces and measured 18 ½ inches. Skylar was welcomed by proud parents Amanda and Bobby Smith, of Euharlee, along with her three siblings, Joseph, 4, Jasmaine, 2 and Maddison, 1.
To honor the occasion, the Women's Center at Cartersville Medical Center and the CMC Gift Shop presented the family with a gift basket and a steak dinner. A special gift was also provided by First Steps, an Advocates for Children program of trained volunteers who visit new moms at Cartersville Medical Center, and offer emotional support, parenting education and referrals to community services.
The experienced maternity staff in CMC's "Special Beginnings" maternity services has received training and certification in: neonatal resuscitation, STABLE - Sugar, Thermoregulation, Airway, Blood Pressure, Lab and Emotional Support and
basic life support. In addition, all labor and delivery nurses must complete the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses' Fetal Heart Monitoring Competency program and Advanced Fetal Heart Monitoring curriculum.
"It is important for moms to know our staff is highly trained and equipped to handle any delivery situation," said Nikki Bentley, RN-C, director, perinatal services.
More than 850 babies were delivered at Cartersville Medical Center in 2011.
