Durham (NC) Regional Hospital, has reportedly become the first hospital in the region to install CT scanners that can accommodate bariatric patients.
The two new 64-slice scanners are bariatric rated, with larger bores and high capacity tables to accommodate patients up to 660 pounds. They allow radiologists to image the heart, brain or lungs in only a few seconds. Capabilities of these new scanners include CT angiography, which enables physicians to view arteries in the brain, heart and peripheral vascular system in greater detail than before, and CT brain perfusion studies to evaluate blood flow to the brain in potential stroke patients.
"With obesity reaching epidemic levels, there are more people in need of medical equipment that can cater to a higher weight," said Greg Thon, MBA, director of Radiology at Durham Regional. "Now we can offer patients up to 660 pounds access to the care they need."
