Staff members in the endoscopy services department at Durham Regional Hospital, Durham, NC, have received the Hallmarks of Healthy Workplaces award from the North Carolina Nurses Association (NCNA) Professional Practice Advisory for the second time in 4 years.
According to the NCNA, the Hallmarks of Healthy Workplaces program is designed to recognize exceptional workplaces for nurses and to help nurses, healthcare providers and administrators create workplaces in which communication flows freely and nurses contribute actively to facility governance.
"We are pleased that endoscopy services has been recognized as an exceptional workplace," said Vicky Orto, MS, RN, NEA-BC, chief nursing officer. "Our nurses exemplify a strong commitment to teamwork while providing excellent customer service."
Surveyors found that staff "seemed very engaged with providing quality care to their patients and in promoting nursing excellence in terms of professional and personal development. We also noted the support and caring as well between the nurses and surgical technicians."
The staff also earned the distinction in 2007.
Hallmarks Recognition is based on three basic criteria: support of nursing professional development, system support for nurses to provide quality service and integration of nursing into operations and governance.
The Hallmarks program is a special project of the NCNA and a result of a Duke Endowment grant that is endorsed by organizations including the North Carolina Hospital Association, North Carolina Center for Nursing, North Carolina Association of Public Health Nurse Administrators, North Carolina Organization of Nurse Leaders, Association for Home & Hospice Care and the Nurse Consultant Conference Group.
