Registered nurses from Flushing Hospital are preparing to start a strike as contract negotiations fail to reach a resolution this week. The 420 RNs are represented by the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA).
The RNs held a news conference for the community on Thursday, Feb. 2 to discuss the issues that brought about the strike. A job fair and resume writing workshop for the RNs will be held on Monday, Feb. 6, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Church of Mary's Nativity at 46-02 Parsons Blvd.
The strike itself is scheduled to start at 7:15 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 7. Representatives from the Nurses Association will be on hand to accompany the RNs as they hand off their assignments to staff on duty.
At each of these events, RNs from the bargaining unit will be on hand to explain why they must strike, discuss contract negotiations, and will answer questions from the community. Negotiation sessions are still scheduled for today and Monday, Feb. 6.
The nurses' most-recent contract expired on Dec. 31, 2011. A federally required 10-day notice of intent to strike was filed on Jan. 23.
