Fort Washakie, WY - School Nurse Wins Nurse of the Year

The Wyoming School Nurses Association recognized Fort Washakie school nurse Alicen Hardy as the Wyoming State School Nurse of the Year for 2012-2013.

Hardy recently was presented with a glass trophy at the association's fall conference in November. Sharon King, a school nurse from Jackson Hole, submitted the nomination along with three letters of recommendations.

She said Hardy's work in the nurses' association has been exceptional.

"She's done so many things for our association," King said. "She can be assertive when she needs to be and she can be an advocate for the good of our group."

"I could not have received this award without having the long-term exceptional support of this school district," Hardy said. "They have generously supported me through many National School Nurse Conferences and the last four years as president of the Wyoming School Nurses Association."

Hardy has been a school nurse for 12 years.

Fremont County School District 21 superintendent Richard McClements said in his letter of recommendations that Hardy helped several children get glasses, and she also helped make sure students received dental check-ups and fluoride mouth rinse treatments.

"She is a great ambassador for school wellness because she makes our students feel special," McClements wrote in the letter.

Principal Aaron Carr said Hardy saw more than 100 students with H1N1 influenza in a two-week period in 2009 and helped students last year who had whooping cough.
