View Comments (0)Print ArticleEmail Article
Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, recently launched a center for perioperative medicine for patients preparing for elective surgeries.

The perioperative team will review each patient's medical history, perform a complete physical exam and coordinate electrocardiograms, chest X-rays, blood work and all required pre-operative medical testing into one appointment and interpret the results on the same day.

Funded by a $300,000, 3-year grant from the Institute of Transfusion Medicine's Blood Science Foundation, the perioperative center is part of an ongoing effort to improve blood management in hospital settings and reduce the need for blood transfusions during and after surgeries.

Physicians from the center for perioperative medicine will also counsel patients regarding the use of medications before and immediately after surgery and manage follow-up care in the hospital for patients with unique risk factors and special needs.
