Sacramento, CA - Peragallo to Speak at UC Davis Nursing School

Nurse scientist Nilda (Nena) Peragallo, one of the nation's foremost researchers in HIV/AIDS risk reduction and prevention in Latinos, will discuss health disparities and the recruitment and retention of minority scientists as the featured speaker at the 2013 Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis Lecture Series: Leading Change, Advancing Health from 4 to 5 p.m. March 6 at the UC Davis Sacramento campus.

Peragallo will present "Advancing the Health of Latino Communities: A Program of Health Disparities Research." A minority scientist herself, Peragallo has dedicated her 35-plus-year career to identify ways to reduce the gap between minority and majority populations' health outcomes. She is recognized internationally for her leadership in nursing, research, public health and minority research. Her current work involves disparity-population-focused interventions in Mexico, Chile and Haiti.  Peragallo is a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, current co-chair of the Bipartisan Policy Center's Health Project Workforce Committee, past president of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses, and founding editor of Hispanic Health Care International.

The Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis Lecture Series brings nationally recognized leaders to the UC Davis, Sacramento campus, to illuminate academic, research and clinical topics that advance health, ignite leadership and promote bold system change. The 4 p.m. lecture will take place in Room 1222 of the Education Building, located at 4610 X St. in Sacramento. A reception will follow. A live video stream of the lecture will be available here.

The lectures provide professional enrichment opportunities for faculty, students, and members of the community and reinforce the school's visionary commitment to lifelong learning for graduates and area nurses. In addition to her lecture presentation, Peragallo will meet with Nursing Science and Health-Care Leadership doctoral students and postdoctoral scholars to provide further insight into her career choices and research trajectory. Throughout the course of her two-day visit to UC Davis, Peragallo will meet with a variety of School of Nursing faculty, as well as other UC Davis faculty and researchers, scholars from the Latino Aging Research Resource Center and UC Davis medical students with a special interest in Latino health to share her expertise and experiences.
