Texas Nurse Researcher Joins American Academy of Nursing

Kathy Baker, PhD, RN, ACNS-BC, CGRN, FAAN, a research consultant and clinical nurse specialist at Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital, has been named as one of 1,500 fellows nationwide by the American Academy of Nursing.

The academy is comprised of the nursing profession's most accomplished leaders in education, management, practice and research. It generates, synthesizes and disseminates nursing knowledge to contribute to health policy and practice for the benefit of the public and the nursing profession.

"I am honored to have been recognized by my profession for doing what I love," Baker said. "Whether I am providing direct patient care, engaging with legislators to influence health policy for the benefit of our citizens, or sharing my knowledge and expertise with colleagues around the world, nursing has provided me with a rich and purposeful career. I can't imagine doing anything else."

Baker has been an associate professor and director of the doctor of nursing practice program at Texas Christian University since 2007. Before joining THAM she was a nurse researcher at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas (2006-07) and an assistant professor at the University of Texas at Arlington (2003-06). She holds 30 years of clinical nursing experience.

Baker completed her PhD at the University of Texas at Austin in 2003. She earned a BSN from Baylor University in 1981 and an MSN from Texas Woman's University in 1988.
She is a member of the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates, the Society of International Gastroenterological Nurses and Endoscopy Associates, the World Association of Medical Editors and the Council of Science Editors.
