I am a nursing instructor adjunct and a full time floor nurse with a MSN and 12 years experience, and I know for a fact most of the nurses in Virginia are not making anywhere near the median number provided in this survey. As a matter of fact, most of the facilities in Richmond have a cap that is less than this median number, which provides unrealistic expectations for new grads.

Sadly this is the trend across the US. As a nurse educator I inform my students to begin taking classes toward higher degrees. My career began as a nursing assistant then LPN and so forth. Only to find teaching positions of higher education requires a PhD.

I have been reading the comments and do feel bad for those of you who are unable to find work. However, some of the blame goes to the school of nursing and the media. Most company's are not hiring nurses who do not have a BSN. Therefore when you graduate it will be difficult to find work. LPN's are limited to nursing homes, therefore go back to school and make yourself marketable. I hope new nurses are entering the profession because they care and not the salary posted by the media.
