Heart Attack Symptoms: Men Versus Women

The symptoms a woman experiences prior to a heart attack are very different from the symptoms most men report.

Over the years, there have been many studies conducted on men having heart attacks.  Researchers have gathered a lot of data on symptoms that precede a male heart attack and how the male heart reacts before, during and after a heart attack.

For decades, researchers assumed heart attack symptoms would be the same for women as they are for men. When they started studying women more closely, however, they realized this was not true.

In one study, nearly 80% of women reported experiencing at least one symptom (and sometimes, more than one symptom) for nearly a month before actually having a heart attack- and in many cases, the reported symptoms did not include chest pain at all!

If you believe you are experiencing heart attack symptoms, go to an emergency department right away. Base the decision to seek treatment on what is normal and not normal for you as an individual. You know your body better than anyone - trust yourself if you are experiencing symptoms that feel "off" or wrong.
