The CDC estimates 45.3 million adults in the U.S. smoke cigarettes. According to the CDC report, "Quitting Smoking Among Adults - United States 2001-2010," just over 68 percent of current smokers said they want to stop. In addition, 48.3 percent of current smokers said they received a health professional's advice to quit in the past year.

The report  also revealed 6.2 percent of the smokers surveyed have successfully quit in the previous year; and that effective treatments have the potential to double and triple successful quit rates. ADVANCE for Nurses offers this resource guide to provide a quick reference of the drugs available for assistance with smoking cessation, so you'll have information at the ready to help your patients understand their options.

The guide highlights smoking cessation drugs by brand name, generic name and drug classification, as well as guidelines for use. This includes indications, clinical actions, warnings/contraindications, drug administration and monitoring.
