The Burn Unit

View Comments (2)Print ArticleEmail Article

A body covered with soot, smoke in the air;
The burning of flesh, a victim comes here.
The pouring of water, the debridement of skin;
Hypothermia an enemy, a heating blanket rushed in.

Dry dressings and assorted ointments for various wound care;
Respiratory therapist alerted, "Bring a ventilator here!"
Many I.V. fluids infusing; the normal saline flows free
Adjusting the rate, calculating every c.c.

Family members waiting in a room nearby,
Many questions to answer, the most important being,
"Why?"

The doctor with the patient attempting to see
The extent of the burn, the depth and degree.
Monitors alarming, call bells blinking on the wall;
A ringing phone; Oh My! another admission call.

Above the sound of the noise and equipment,
A comforting voice you will hear,
"You're in The Burn Unit,
"And we're nurses' who care."

I would like to express on how well that was wrote. I can so understand, each and everything that you wrote. I think "us" Burn unit staff, look at thing or patients in a different way. I think God each and every day for my gift to be the best RN them patients can have. I can't think of any other nursing I would rather do. Them patients need a real smile, someone who will show each and everyone of them that it will be ok and it will get better. Burn ICU RN for over 7yrs....

Great Job, I do not know how the burn nurses can do it.
This must be one of the hardest and toughest, physically and mentally.
I give Miss Nina a thumbs up.
The poem was great.
