Midwife services are now available to all expectant mothers at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. While midwives have provided services at Cedars in the past, this move marks the first effort to provide those services directly through the medical center.

Deborah Frank, CNM, is excited about the partnership with Cedars. She sees the union as a win-win for everyone involved.

"I'm so excited to be at Cedars. This has been a goal of mine for a long time," Frank said. "It's a partnership I feel will be good for everyone involved, especially the mothers."

Frank is happy to see Cedars keeping with the trend of a more natural style of birthing, as well, and she sees residual economic benefits.

"The model of care used worldwide is quite different than it is here," Frank told ADVANCE. "In other countries, healthy women always come to midwives whereas only those with complications go to physicians. As we make this transition in this country, we can provide personalized, comprehensive care with better outcomes at a much lower cost."

Trish Ting Lee became the first mother to receive Frank's services at Cedars while giving birth to her son, Max. She believes the impact on her experience was profound.

"The amount of time the nurse midwife spends with you is amazing. The care is very personal and I feel safe," Ting Lee shared. "It's very different from a patient-doctor relationship. All the nurses were amazed because I gave birth with no epidural and recovered so much faster. It's because Deborah was with me the whole way."
