This purpose of this continuing education activity is to educate nurses about polypharmacy in older adults. After reading this article, the nurse learner will be able to:
1. State the definition of polypharmacy and the complications of multiple medication use by older patients.
2. Provide examples of possible signs and symptoms related to adverse effects of certain medications on the older adult.
3. Describe the use of the Beers criteria in reference to the assessment of polypharmacy in the older adult.
