U.S. Surgeon General Issues Call to Action to End Opioid, Alcohol Abuse

U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, MD, MBA, is calling for an end to a public health crisis of drug and alcohol addiction in the United States.

Murthy released the first-ever Surgeon General’s report on addiction with the hope of combating opioid and alcohol abuse in the United States, according to Reuters. Deaths in the country from overdoses reached a record high in 2014, growing 6.5% to 47,055.

“The most important thing is, we have to change attitudes towards addiction and get people into treatment,” Murthy said in an interview. “Addiction is a disease of the brain, not a character flaw.”
