Nurses top Gallup’s “most trusted” poll for 16th consecutive year

Americans rate their level of trust in nearly two dozen different professions

While many Americans find their opinions changing about various sectors of our society, the nursing profession maintains its lofty position as the country’s most trusted professionals.

That’s according to a Gallup poll that provides an annual ranking of the honesty and ethics standards of various professions. In the most recent survey, 22 different job disciplines were included. For the 16th year in row, nursing came out at the top.

The poll was conducted toward the end of 2017. Gallup first began asking about nurses in 1999, and the profession has topped the list every year except for 2001 (in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, firefighters topped the list that year.)

A whopping 82 percent of Americans rated the honesty and ethical practices of nurses as “very high” or “high”, with military officers next at 71 percent. Pharmacists and medical doctors were also among the six professions that had a majority of respondents declare their level of trust as “very high” or “high.”
