Social media is one of the most significant tools in job searches today. It is being used by both candidates and recruiters.

The unemployment rate in the United States was a mere 5% in December 2015, the same as in the previous 2 months and the lowest in more than 7 years, (http://data.bls.gov/timeseries/LNS14000000).

This indicates that jobs are available and that people seeking a new job just need to know where to look. In 2016, that means online.

Social Media

The most significant job acquisition strategy today is being able to fully utilize social media.

Not only are employers posting an array of open positions across their social media platforms, but recruiters are also using the supporting technologies to seek out potential candidates. Relying on multiple online channels to support their recruiting efforts, search agents do not view allocation across sites as a zero-sum game; recruiters simply want multiple channels to generate the greatest possible reach.

Similarly, business-oriented social networking services such as LinkedIn provide job seekers insight into who they know at prospective employers. Moreover, as search costs remain low, and with no single site listing a complete database of available jobs, job seekers will continue to turn to a variety of social media sources for employment guidance.

Included in this guidance are posts shedding light on internal and external operations within a company. Thus, if a company offers a displeasing culture, salary structure or benefits program, current or past employees are likely to take to social media with their complaints.

“Millennials are highly influenced by peer opinion, and social media provides an easy way for them to share what they feel about products, companies and important issues,” explained Rasheen Carbin, co-founder and CMO of the nspHire job search app. “Previously, online reputation management was something that worried only candidates. However, that’s not true anymore-employers need to be worried too.”

Glassdoor

Glassdoor, a website where employees and former employees can anonymously review present or workplaces, provides detailed accounts of companies and their management like never before. This makes it increasingly possible for potential employees to weigh the pros and cons of a company from a well-rounded approach before making a commitment.

“We find that nearly three-quarters of job seekers use two or more sites when completing a job search and more than half use three or more sites,” explained Palash Misra, director at Stax, a strategy consulting firm in Boston. “Each of these sites plays an important role in the overall job search, and sites like Glassdoor that enable employees to rate their employers provide job seekers with valuable content and feedback on what it’s like to work at prospective company.”

Glassdoor can help prevent job seekers from unknowingly putting themselves into a position where management is poor or holds views on social issues that conflict with the job seeker. Through online employer-reviewing tools, candidates can ensure they are finding their best employment matches just as employers seek to find the best talent.

Keywords

Keywords are another important feature of the modern job search. Most companies now scan resumes for key terms. To ensure that these keywords exist within a job-specific resume, it is important to study the wording in that job’s posted description.

“For example, if a company is loudly proclaiming the importance of a collaborative culture, or a culture of honesty and transparency, perhaps say by identifying their firm as “WYSIWYG” (“what you see is what you get”), then it won’t hurt to include your desire and experience working for companies that value transparency, honesty and collaboration,” stressed Yair Riemer, chief marketing officer of CareerArc in Burbank, Calif. “It may sound straightforward, but it could make for a key differentiation between applicants who just applied with a generic message and resume.”

Additionally, strong keywords can be found by analyzing a company’s career site or their job listings via social media. By adding these words to a resume, a job applicant will increase the chances of being noticed and assist a resume in being recognized by resume scanning software, a technology often used by hiring companies.

In summary, the ability to understand and use social media, employer review sites and keywords all affect the way employers and job candidates locate and communicate with each other. By integrating all of these trends into a job search, potential candidates are better setting themselves up for job acquisition success.
